Angola Map – Cities & Towns [AO]

Angola is mapped through a wide Atlantic coastline, the Luanda metropolitan area, the central highlands, the Cabinda exclave, and large eastern and southern interior provinces. The country uses the ISO alpha-2 code AO and has a 21-province administrative layout after the recent political-administrative division. Place labels on an Angola city map need careful reading because some high-population entries are municipalities inside Greater Luanda, while other labels are provincial capitals, ports, mining towns, border towns, or inland transport hubs.

    Map Orientation for Angola

Angola occupies the western side of Southern Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean on the west and inland borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Namibia, and the Republic of the Congo through the Cabinda exclave. The national map is not evenly urbanized. The strongest label density appears around Luanda, the lower Cuanza corridor, Benguela–Lobito, Lubango, Huambo, and selected provincial seats. The east and southeast cover large areas with fewer towns and longer distances between mapped settlements.

    Coastal Belt

Luanda, Lobito, Benguela, Moçâmedes, Soyo, and Cabinda anchor the main Atlantic-side labels. These places connect port geography, industry, and dense urban growth.

    Central Highlands

Huambo, Cuito, Caála, Bailundo, Andulo, and nearby towns form the highland settlement band. Road and rail links make this zone central to inland map reading.

    Eastern Provinces

Luena, Saurimo, Dundo, Cazombo, and Luau help read the long eastern side of Angola, where towns sit far apart across Moxico, Moxico Leste, and the Lundas.

    Southern Drylands

Lubango, Ondjiva, Menongue, Namibe, and Tômbwa mark the southern and southwestern map pattern, where plateau, desert, and border geography shape settlement spacing.

Angola’s Settlement Pattern on the Map

The 2024 census shows a strong concentration of population in municipalities located in provincial seats and along the coast. The ten most populous municipalities are Kilamba Kiaxi, Cacuaco, Lubango, Mulenvos, Viana, Huambo, Cazenga, Uíge, Maianga, and Camama. These ten municipalities account for about 24% of the national population while covering less than 1% of the territory. This makes Angola a country where a small set of dense municipal labels carries a large share of the population data.

    Largest Province by Population
    Luanda

24.1% of the 2024 national population.

    Main Inland Highland Cities
    Huambo, Cuito, Lubango

    Administrative Division and Province Seats

Angola moved from the older 18-province pattern to a 21-province layout. Older maps, datasets, and ISO subdivision lists may still show the previous structure. For publication, map labels should make clear whether the dataset follows the newer national administrative division or an older boundary layer.

How to Read City and Town Labels in Angola

    Municipality Is Not Always City

Many census counts are municipal counts. A label such as Kilamba Kiaxi, Cacuaco, or Viana refers to a municipal unit within the Luanda urban area rather than a separate city in the same way as Lubango or Huambo.

    Provincial Seats Carry Map Weight

Some smaller places appear prominently because they are administrative seats. Catete, Cazombo, and Mavinga are examples of places that matter for administrative map reading even when their municipal populations are far below the Luanda municipalities.

    Coastal Labels Are Dense

Luanda, Sumbe, Benguela, Lobito, Moçâmedes, Soyo, and Cabinda make the coastline much denser in labels than the eastern and southeastern interior.

    Older Maps May Lag

Maps based on older boundary files may still show 18 provinces or use the former Cuando Cubango and Moxico boundaries. The newer layout has Cuando, Cubango, Moxico, Moxico Leste, Luanda, and Icolo e Bengo as separate map units.

    Regional City Clusters

    Luanda Urban Cluster

Luanda, Kilamba Kiaxi, Cacuaco, Viana, Mulenvos, Cazenga, Maianga, Camama, Talatona, and Belas form the densest mapped urban cluster in the country.

    Map Data Notes

    What Is Reliable

National population totals, urban/rural totals, province populations, and municipality counts are taken from Angola’s 2024 census results published by the Instituto Nacional de Estatística. The 2024 total resident population is 36,604,681.

    What May Vary

City population numbers vary by source because city proper, municipality, urban district, metropolitan area, and province totals are different units. Luanda is the clearest example of this issue.

    Boundary Caution

Some map layers still follow the former 18-province division. Current national administrative references use 21 provinces, while some international coding systems may take time to update subdivision lists.

    Coordinate Use

Coordinates in the map module are approximate place centers for public map orientation. They are not street addresses and should not be used for parcel, property, or navigation-grade positioning.

Best use of this map: national city orientation, province-seat reference, coast-versus-interior comparison, and selected municipality population comparison.

    FAQ

What is the capital of Angola?

Luanda is the capital of Angola. On population maps it should be read carefully because Luanda Province, Luanda city labels, and Luanda urban municipalities can show different totals.

What are the main cities and towns on an Angola map?

The main mapped places include Luanda, Lubango, Huambo, Benguela, Lobito, Cabinda, Cuito, Uíge, Malanje, Luena, Moçâmedes, Saurimo, Dundo, Soyo, Mbanza Kongo, Menongue, Ondjiva, Cazombo, Catete, and Mavinga.

How many provinces does Angola have?

Current national administrative references use 21 provinces. Older maps and some international datasets may still show 18 provinces, so the source date and boundary layer matter.

Why do Angola city population numbers differ between sources?

Counts can refer to a municipality, city proper, urban district, metropolitan area, or province. The 2024 census provides official municipality and province counts, while city lists from other datasets may use different boundaries.

Why is Cabinda shown apart from mainland Angola?

Cabinda is an Angolan exclave on the Atlantic coast north of the Congo River region. It is separated from mainland Angola by territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Which parts of Angola are most densely labeled with towns?

The densest label cluster is around Luanda. Other strong clusters appear along the Benguela–Lobito coast, in the central highlands around Huambo and Cuito, and around Lubango in the southern highlands.
